12" Antique Brass Oxidized Handcarved Bhumisparsa Mudra Buddha Statue – Handmade in Nepal

Description

This is a handmade antique oxidized Buddha statue from Nepal. A dye using the lost wax technique is created by our master sculptor who specializes in creating various forms of Buddha. The statue is completed through the brass oxidization process that results in finest and perfection in the finishing of the statue.

This is a Copper Statue of Buddha sitting on a lotus. The statue is fully carved with square mandala with floral motifs and is highly decorated.

Here in this statue Buddha is seated in Bhumisparsha mudra.

About the Bhumisparsa Mudra (Earth Witness Gesture):

The Bhumisparsa mudra recalls a specific moment in Buddha Shakyamuni’s biography. After Mara had sought to dislodge the future Buddha from his seat under the Bodhi tree by attacking him with his minions and seducing him with his daughters, he ultimately tried to cause the Buddha to move by claiming that he had no right to occupy that spot. The Bodhisattva then touched the earth, thereby calling on the goddess of the earth Prthivi or Sthavara to bear witness to his practice of virtue over his many lifetimes on the bodhisattva path. The goddess responded affirmatively by causing the earth to quake. With that Mara withdrew for good and the bodhisattva went on to achieve buddhahood that evening. In Southeast Asia, this scene is elaborated to include the goddess, called Thorani, emerging from the earth to wring from her hair all of the water that the Buddha had offered during his lifetimes as a bodhisattva. The water creates a flood that sweeps away Mara and his horde. The mudra is also considered a gesture of immovability (acala) and is thus the mudra associated with the Buddha Aksobhya.
